About the Community Council

OpenOffice.org is governed by the Community Council. The Community Council adjudicates conflicts and offers a forum for community members; it can also suggest Project goals. The CC members are representative of the Project: They are your representatives. Any OpenOffice.org community member is eligible to serve on the Community Council. Eligibility is more fully described in the charter establishing the Community Council.

Background

The Community Council Charter was originally drafted by Josh Berkus, formerly Lead of the Marketing Project, and with the participation of the Project Leads. It was further reviewed by Sun legal before it was circulated to all the Project Leads and community members for comments. Finally the proposal was sent through an acceptance vote of the general community (the vote organized by Cristian Driga) and was overwhelmingly approved by those who chose to participate in the vote. There were 259 Votes of which 252 were in favor of the proposal and only 7 against. Those of us who worked with the community on the proposal and the FAQ were very happy to see that we had passed this milestone.

All discussions conducted by the Community Council are public: IRC logs for the periodic meetings, email discussions, agendas; they are all public and available for comment by OpenOffice.org members and links are posted to the relevant Council lists:

  • Council members use the discuss@council.openoffice.org list; only they and their deputies can post to it. Everyone else is entitled to subscribe to the list, just not post. By subscribing, you can keep up to date on Council activities. The archives are also open to the public.
  • For the free submission of agenda items by any OpenOffice.org community member, we ask that you use our wiki:

Link to the current agenda will be posted to discuss@council.openoffice.org prior to any CC meeting. Meetings are held at least once a month and whenever the occasion demands it. All meetings are held via IRC and confirmed via email, except those that take place in person during the annual OOoCon. Discussions also take place on discuss@council.openoffice.org.
